How to make a nativity-themed table centrepiece

Bring your dinner table to life with a fabulously festive arrangement

Traditional Christmas decorations are back – thanks to our ongoing love affair with all things vintage. From Christmas tree kitsch to classic wreaths and garlands, festive décor is going old school. And what could be more traditional than a Christmas Nativity table centrepiece, brimming with festive foliage?

Dress your table to impress

Inspired by the traditional Nativity arrangement by painter Thomas Kinkade (the Godfather of bucolic Christmas card scenes), we’ve come up with some simple ideas for creating your own nativity centrepiece – guaranteed to be the talk of the Christmas dinner table.

1. Choose your Nativity scene

Opt for a Nativity scene that suits the rest of your Christmas décor - and bear in mind that it will need to fit in the middle of your table with room for foliage around it. In other words, think small!

2. Create a structure

How you structure your centrepiece will depend on your chosen nativity scene. If it is one single ornament, you could stand it on a block of florists’ foam and use that as the base for your foliage. If your scene has a number of pieces, an alternative option is to buy a wreath ring and weave your leaves, branches and berries through that.

3. Get festive with foliage

Now for the fun part! Choose a variety of Christmassy leaves, ivy, branches, winter heather and berries, and attach them to your base. Use a broad mix of shapes, colours and textures to really bring your display to life. Try winterberry branches for colour, eucalyptus leaves for their beautiful ‘frosted’ finish, holly leaves and fir cones for texture and fir-tree branches to complement your Christmas tree. Add a bright pop of colour with poinsettias placed amongst the greenery.

And if you can't get enough of green, head over to The Green Gallery which has a great idea on how to make a beautiful green backdrop for your Christmas gathering.
