Interior inspiration: plant stools

The new plant stand trend has got legs

The plant-stand is back – which means houseplants can take centre-stage in the home once again. But forget the ostentatious cane constructions of the 1970s, the new incarnation is simple, understated – and looks uncannily like a stool.

From industrial to retro, here are a few of our favourite three-legged design ideas:

Two-tone

The recent dip-dyed trend that saw all our favourite homewares dunked in neon paint has been turned on its head for this look. The result is minimalist but soft, modern but organic. To create the look, take a plain wooden stool, draw a line a third the way up the legs, and paint as far as the line in a soft, off-white tone.

Try it with a: Kentia palm.

In the bag

Soften a clean and clinical white bathroom with organic materials. This simple, wooden stool makes the perfect foil for foliage. To complete the look, place your planter in a small hessian sack and roll down the top to the desired height.

Mid-century magic

This classic shape (a triangular table top with rounded corners and a gold, metallic trim) was a staple in ‘50s homes. And its simple form and clean lines makes it equally at home in modern spaces. Pick one up from a vintage store or eBay and channel some retro charm.

Industrial charm

A classically elegant bathroom with roll-top bath, immaculate tiling and flashes of marble is given an edgy update with the addition of a raw wood bath plank and distressed metal stool. Top with a fragrant herb to transform shower time into a hotel spa-like experience.

Try it with: Rosemary or lavender

Old meets new

If you like an eclectic mix of old and new, one option is to whitewash some of your older, vintage pieces to give them a clean, modern twist and unify the space. Junk shops are full of fabulous finds like this one – and can be transformed with a lick of white paint.

Screw-top chic

The screw-top stool is a design classic. To give it a fresh new look that’s perfect for a bedroom, paint it with a cool, crisp pastel shade such as this gorgeous mint green.
