Looking for new roles
The increasing interest in fantasy is a response to the fact that society is becoming very complicated for many people, according to Marinka Copier, lecturer at HKU University of the Arts Utrecht. “Everyone plays roles,” she says in the NRC newspaper. “For example, you behave differently at work than with your children. And with increasing homeworking we even need to be able to play multiple roles at the same time. It’s becoming ever more complicated. This creates the need for a different environment without rules, where you can play a new role that you choose for yourself.”
For people with imagination
This can mean dressing up as an elf, steampunk or amazon at a special event, but there are also enthusiasts who include fairytale elements in their home environment. This trend is known as ‘Domythic Bliss’ and is for those who feel completely at home in this lifestyle. The potted rose fits perfectly with so much creativity. It’s a completely proportionate miniature of a large rosebush, as if a good fairy has waved her magic wand over it.
How Sleeping Beauty would you like to get?
The potted rose is also a summery plant that fits well with this summer’s mysterious vibe, bursting with matte, saturated colours and with discombobulating patterns, falling stars and garlands. You can use it to blend fantasy and reality. That goes well with these times, when developments are happening very rapidly: 3D is becoming 4D, there’s fungus-based furniture that grows itself and you can already charge your mobile phone with a plant. Potted roses brings the summer trend indoors, but you can also shut yourself away like a real Sleeping Beauty if it all gets too much for you. If you think that turning your room entirely into ‘Sleeping Beauty in Space’ is a step too far, you can simply create the mood in a corner with one or two potted roses; which looks brilliant too.
