The red Poinsettia

The Poinsettia is often associated with Christmas, but is in full bloom during the Mexican summer. They are most commonly red but are just as beautiful in pink, white and salmon. The plant has a contemporary feel but is actually as old as the Aztecs, who named the plant Cuetlaxochitl (let's just call it Cuet) and used it as a dye. To make things just that little bit more confusing, the part which may look like the flowers are actually the coloured leaves; the flowers are in fact the tiny buds in the middle of the rosette.

Poinsettia Power

Because the Poinsettia has such lovely leaves, it can be styled in many different ways. The red Victorian variety looks great in a dark green pot, whereas the white one looks breathtakingly chic in shiny black. The bright pink variety becomes the star of the show in a silver grey planter and the salmon coloured one is a beautiful match with copper and gold. Whatever colour you choose, it's completely natural, luxurious and very on trend.
