If you're lucky enough to have one in your home, a fireplace is the perfect spot for this festive plant installation, but wherever you choose to hang your stockings will work just as well.
You will need
- A trellis with a grid for hanging plants on; we opted for a black colour one
- A piece of chicken wire the same size as your trellis
- Different plants in unusual colours and shapes. We chose velvet plant, begonia foliage, Anthurium, fishbone calathea, phalaenopsis orchid, Dendodrium "Purple Happiness", Fittonia "Pink Forest Flame", Monolena primuliflora and peperomia.
How to make it
Step 1. Visit the local garden centre for inspiration, and choose a range of different plants that go well together. You can also use plants that you already have. Look for different types of leaves and shapes, and sizes that complement each other. To give you a guide, we used a total of 15 different plants for our backdrop.
Step 2. Set up a wooden trellis, and paint it your choice of colour. We opted for black, because it blends nicely with our interior. Pin a grid of chicken wire to the back, that you can hang or suspend pots from.
Step 3. Water the plants, then hang them onto the trellis to create your very own botanical painting. Have fun playing around with their positions until you’re happy with the finished effect. If you find it's missing something, a light Anthurium will add sparkle to the greenery.
Step 4. Step back and admire the finished result. With a pile of presents under the tree and a well-filled stocking hanging in the midst of the plant installation, your living room will be transformed into a botanical spectacle on Christmas morning.
