DIY: Book planter

Transform your dusty, old books into vintage-chic plant displays

Vintage books can not only look pretty on a shelf  – they can look beautiful as a planter, too. If you have an old book lying around the house that you no longer read, why not breathe new life into it by converting it into a pretty vintage planter?

Succulents make the ideal plants for this as they can thrive with a relatively small amount of soil and water. They're also available in a multitude of hues and textures, they look gorgeous, too.

If you don’t have any suitable books already, head to your local charity shop or a second hand bookshop, where you'll be sure to find something suitable.

What you’ll need:

  • Vintage books
  • Small succulent plants
  • Succulent potting soil
  • Moss
  • Cling film or a clear plastic sheet
  • Sharp craft knife

How to make it:

1. Open the book where you’d like the plant to sit.

2. Draw a rectangle the desired size of your miniature garden.

3. Use the knife to hollow out a 2-inch space, cutting a few pages at a time.

4. Line the hole with the cling film or clear plastic sheet.

5. Fill with the potting soil.

6. Plant your succulents, packing the soil tightly around them.

7. Cover the top of the dry soil with moss.
