Introducing the moon garden

Step into the magical world of the night garden

Your garden might look beautiful when the sun is shining. But what happens after dark? As few of us get time in the day to sit back, relax and soak up the beauty of our outdoor spaces, creating a garden that shines at night means we don’t have to miss out, anymore.

Dramatic uplighters can certainly illuminate your plants – but imagine a garden that comes to life at night all by itself, twinkling and shimmering under the silvery light of the moon and emitting an intoxicating evening scent.

The key to creating the perfect moonlight garden is to choose the right plants and foliage to come alive when the sun goes down. Meet the shining stars of the night garden…

Moonlight reflectors

To capture and reflect the unique light quality of the moon, look for plants with chalky, silver-blue leaves, such as eucalyptus, dusty miller and melianthus. Add a flowering plant, such as ‘snow in summer’ with its delicate silver foliage and smattering of white, star-shaped petals.

Night-scented bloomers

There is a whole host of plants that fill the air with intoxicating scent at night, aiming to attract nocturnal pollinators, such as moths.  Choose from heady-scented datura or train wisteria floribunda around a night-time pergola and enjoy its scented ‘stalactites’ of colour. Honeysuckle, jasmine and evening primrose boast pretty, delicate flowers but all pack a punch when it comes to flooding the air with scent.

Light the way

A border of white pebbles along the edges of your garden path will reflect the light to create a subtle glow leading to your moonlit garden but you could also enhance Mother Nature’s own lighting with some subtle LED fairy lights. Now all you need is some comfortable garden seating, plenty of cushions and blankets and a warm jumper for when the temperature cools.
