Azuma Makoto’s surreal bonsai art

Who knew a bonsai tree inside an old power plant could be so beautiful?

From locking exotic flower bouquets inside blocks of ice to sending bonsai trees into space, Tokyo artist Azuma Makoto juxtaposes the natural world with the most surreal and unlikely of settings – and the results are breathtaking.

The power of nature

Makoto’s latest installation sees a beautifully cultivated bonsai tree suspended by wires inside a huge industrial cooling tower at an abandoned power station. The imposing, dystopian looking site in the city of Charleroi just north of Brussels in Belgium was built in 1912 but decommissioned in 2007 when its huge carbon footprint was deemed untenable.

The distressed, moss-ridden walls of the cooling tower provide a dramatic foil for the immaculately shaped and tended, lush green tree.

And don’t worry plant lovers, no plants were harmed during the making of this work – or any other in Makoto’s bonsai installation series. The artist carefully extracts the trees from the earth, photographs them in their new setting then returns them to their original home without harm. Learn more about Makoto's works at his website
